Newcastle Region Social Update - Upcoming Activities
Northern Region branch
volunteer Jason Tumpy travelled to
Sydney to participate in the study,
wanting to help somebody else out
and to find out more about pain
management.
“I heard about the research
when I was an inpatient at
Royal North Shore Hospital and
agreed to take part — I would
recommend participating!”
“We had a chat and I answered
questions before the scans
got underway. I was in the MRI
machine where Sylvia conducted
lots of scans; it is a non-invasive
process. During a scan Sylvia
scratched my toe with a fork to
measure my brain response. I tried
to cooperate as best I could and
hope it helps somebody.”
Jason was 38 years old when
he had a motorbike accident in
July 2010, sustaining a T4/5/6
SCI. He lives just south of
Newcastle, and volunteers in the
office of the Northern Branch.
“I really enjoy going and helping
out at ParaQuad, it feels good.
Volunteering is well worth it.”
Although Jason has experienced
pain in the past, he is self-managing
and says he is currently pain free.
