NSTA
CHAMPIONSHIPS
sponsored by Guardian Funerals
T
he 2016 NSTA Champion-
ships were run over 6 Sun-
days plus finals day, with each
grade being completed on
one particular Sunday, except
for finals.
156 players entered the
tournament, creating 196
event entries, 237 matches
and in total 3,197 games were
played.
Finals Day on Sunday
20th March saw the first of the
finals matches commence at
our NSTA Headquarters, Talus
Street, Naremburn at 8am.
The NSTA Junior Champion-
ships were also concluded
on this day and throughout
the course of the day, we saw
some wonderful tennis, surely
heralding future champions.
The Open Ladies Singles final com-
menced at 11am between
Rebecca
Jones
and last year’s finalist,
Alisa
Jeregui.
Alisa was relatively untroubled
to defeat Rebecca 6-1 6-3.
Guardian Funerals Hit the Target was
then set up on centre court and attracted
a large crowd of spectators, players,
juniors and hopefuls, all vying to win the
beautiful Easter hamper presented by
Guardian Funerals. 13 year old
Philip
Hilble
finished up as the most accurate
and was the envy of the crowd when he
walked away with the fabulous hamper.
The Open Mens Singles followed at
1pm between last year’s winner,
Ash
Radford-Sutton
and
James O’Brien
.
We were treated to some incredible ral-
lies and great power from both players,
with James ultimately running out the
winner 6-4 6-2.
All finals were played in great spirit
and a large crowd of spectators was
on hand, giving a fantastic ambiance
and creating great comraderie between
NSTA members, even though they were
from rival Clubs. Everyone was treated
to a barbecue lunch and thanks to our
regular barbecue chef,
John O’Leary
, for
another fabulous job.
Sue Woodward
partnered
Vanessa
Thompson
to take out the Open Ladies
Doubles from
Siobhan Munro
and
Sarah Gillespie-Jones
, and the Open
Mixed Doubles was won by
Rebecca
Jones
and
Nick Turnham
. With the
‘finish line’ in sight, one set to go in
the Open Mens Doubles, the heavens
opened and the completion of the final
had to be delayed. Ultimately this was
won by
Roger Rogowski
and
Troy
Delmege
over
Ash
Radford-Sutton
and
Andrew Scanlan.
Stuart Oldham
from Neutral Bay had
some excellent wins to
take out the A2 Singles,
although was pushed
by a greatly improved
Ryan Seeto
in the
final.
Liz Gowen
just
keeps coming back and
notched up another
win in the A2 Ladies
Singles.
George Stewart
took out the Veterans
Singles against
Scott
Phillips
and the Vet-
erans Doubles went to
Sue Woodward
and
Graham Metcalf
over
Clive Wilkinson
and
Graeme Sticka
.
The Mayor of Willoughby, Gail Giles-
Gidney, was our guest of honour at the
Presentation, joined by
Melissa Ander-
son
, our 14 times Open Singles Champi-
on, who unfortunately, due to injury, was
unable to defend her title.
Our grateful thanks are again extend-
ed to our sponsor
Guardian Funerals
for
their ongoing support and sponsorship of
our NSTA Championships.
The annual NSTA Championships
continues to be a great tradition within
our Association and provides an op-
portunity for local players from different
clubs to compete against each other in
a competitive but friendly environment,
and thus bringing them together as one
community.
