24 Induction Guide | New Employee
Applying a ‘Person-First’ approach
It is important that you understand in a practical way how to
implement our ‘Person-First’ Approach. The ‘Person-First’ approach
means our resident’s individuality is put at the fore front of their care
in order to suit their personal needs and preferences.
Knowing our residents as individuals is fundamental to Bupa’s
approach to ‘Person-First’ care. As part of your induction you will
complete a ‘Person-First’ eLearning module.
‘Person-First’ approach means understanding the uniqueness of the
person. Using tools like the ‘Map of Life’, we ask about the person’s
life, their values and history, family and how they like things to be
done; their day in their way.
Life boards
Once we have completed a Map of Life, if you are in a carer
role, you will then work with the person and their family
to create a ‘Life Board’. This is a creative board, filled with
memories and pictures that are important to the individual,
or represent something important to them.
Life boards are important to help us bring an individual’s
personality to every aspect of our care.

When a person first arrives, if they desire, we complete a ‘Map of Life’. This includes finding out about
an individual’s values, history and how they like things to be done.
If the person can’t share this because they have difficulties with communication and memory, we
will get to know them through their family’s eyes. We also do this through observing the individual’s
actions and reactions, what they enjoy, when they enjoy it – even if they can’t tell us directly.
This approach goes beyond “what needs to be done” and focuses on how we support them. When
this is achieved consistently every day for each person then we know we are providing excellent
‘Person-First’ care.
