fortunate that Sheryl Swarbrick was able to take up that position. She will maintain the
Club’s membership register and manage the huge amount of paperwork that has to be done
in conjunction with the administration of the Club and the organization of our events.
Sheryl’s appointment has relieved the various committees of that sometimes-onerous task.
Greater membership participation was also evident in the groups running our events.
Randle Beavis, assisted by Craig Bradtke, brought together a team to organise and manage
the Northam Flying Fifty and the Goomalling Sprints. The success of these events is
testament to the enthusiasm and skill of this group who take great pride in their
achievements. Randle’s negotiations with the Northam Shire have secured the financial
future of the event and a better relationship with the people of Northam.
The Albany team, led by Greg Marchesi, Phil Shephard, Kevin Organ, Vicki Clark and Ross
Oxwell, has also brought together a group of enthusiastic workers who have expanded the
Albany Classic into one of the State’s premier motoring events.
A successful Coalfields 500 was organised with an in-house team taking on the role this
year. Brad Peters, Steve Boyle and Paul Bartlett led the group and managed to co-opt a
number of helpers, in particular Samantha Allot and husband, Tim, who provided
invaluable advice. It was a steep learning curve for the organisers and they put in a great deal
of time and effort to ensure the event’s success.
Thanks to the scrutineering team, run by Robbie Rhodes, who has now retired, and is
replaced by Brad MacIntosh. Thanks also to Ken Tong for organising Flaggies and pace cars.
The Competition Committee coordinates the activities of all the people involved in running
the VSCC’s motoring events. This Committee deals with the legal issues, timetabling,
insurance and the numerous other administrative details involved in conducting events. Our
thanks go to Chairman, Paul Bartlett, and this dedicated group, without whom we would
not be able to conduct such a successful motor-sport program.
While the motoring events have taken centre stage, equally important is the Club’s effective
social program that involves a large number of members. The Club has been extremely
fortunate to have capable leaders who have established these programs and have brought
members together to ensure their implementation is successful.
A team led by Ron Fabry has successfully carried out the Caversham Car Project and the
Clubhouse administration and maintenance.
A Social Committee led by Len Kidd, Ed Farrar and David Moir has conducted all social
events, like the 30th Anniversary Cocktail Party and the 30th Anniversary Dinner and the
organisation of VSCC car displays at events held by other clubs.
Members also give their time and work quietly behind the scenes carrying out the many
tasks that make belonging to the VSCC such a wonderful experience. My thanks go to
Graeme Whitehead and Mike Connell who stock and man the bar, Len Kidd who organises
guest speakers, Mark Jones, the Club Librarian, Mike Barnes who maintains and sells our
regalia, Bob Campbell, editor of the
Vintage Metal
, David Moir and Frank Clay who run the
VSCC website, Lou Symes who chairs the Caversham Committee and our historians, John
Napier-Winch and Len Kidd.
Maintaining the organisation of the VSCC is complex and heavily dependant on the
contributions of its members.
My report highlights the number of good people who have taken up active roles in the
running of the VSCC this year. The wonderful support and goodwill the club receives from
its members is an indication of its good health.
In 2017 we face a number of challenges. Our tenure at the Clubhouse is uncertain and
