DUKE OF EDINBURGH REPORT
2015 was a big year for the
Duke program at
OLMC.Wehad 21 girls complete the
SILVER Expeditions, and 31
girls complete the BRONZE.
The Bronze girls did their
Practice Expedition in the
Royal National Park in March,
hiking the CoastTrack on the
first day, then on Day 2 hiking
the Botany Bay National
Park from Kurnell toWanda.
The Bronze Qualifying Hike in November then saw
the troupe travel to Kiama to hike to Gerringong and
Minnamurra. These girls were an enthusiastic group
who set up their tents, cooked their own meals and
navigated each day. Thank you to the teachers who
also did the whole thing: Mrs. Kathy O’Shea, Mrs. Gail
Hofman, Mrs. Lyn Coghlan and Mrs. Donna Heyde.
The SILVER girls did their Practice Expedition in the
Blue Mountains, camping at Katoomba for 2 nights,
and hiking alongside the 3 Sisters to Leura, and around
Wentworth Falls. Their Qualifying Expedition in
November saw them hike 19kms of the Great North
Walk from Teralba to Glenrock. They set up camp
there for the first night, then hiked to Newcastle on
Day 2, to catch the ferry across to Stockton for the
second night. The heat was a challenge, but an early
session of Stand up Paddleboarding on the Hunter
River helped to cool everybody off. Great effort to
all these girls, and to the accompanying teachers: Mrs.
Kathy O’Shea, Mrs. Alison Kritzler and Mrs. Amanda
Rilkovski.
For these girls to complete their Awards, they
must also fulfil the other 3 criteria: 3 months of
Community Service, Physical Recreation and a Skill.
These must all be recorded online and submitted to
the International Duke of Edinburgh Award Office.
Congratulations to all those who took up the
challenge.
Mrs. Joanne King
Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator
