Visitor Economy
Tourism and hospitality are key industries and major contributors
to Australia’s and the Central Coast economy. However, it has not
been well represented in economic profiles in the past, because it
actually includes parts of many different traditional industries.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes the “Tourism Satellite
Account” which is a separate set of national accounts which look
at the value and contribution of tourism in the national economy.
This dataset presents National Economics microsimulation model
of the tourism satellite account at the local level, showing the
value of total sales and value add, as well as annual estimates
of employment and FTE employment for the tourism sector.
Understanding the current role of your tourism sector is important
if you are looking at attracting visitors to your area, and as
information for businesses looking to locate in the area.
In 2014/15, the total tourism and hospitality sales in Central Coast
NSW was $1,573.3m, the total value added was $804.9m.
Total Visitor numbers
The Destination NSW National Visitor Survey (NVS), YE Dec 15,
Tourism Research Australia (TRA) data indicates that the Central
Coast region received over 5 million visitors for the year ending
December 2015 which is a 17.2% growth in visitor numbers since
year ending December 2014. This represents 9.1% share of the
regional NSW tourism market and indicates a growing market
after a recent downturn in the visitor economy.
These visitor numbers, shown by industry sector below, signify
that the Central Coast visitor economy is growing tourism and
hospitality destination with significant opportunities for growth
particularly in the international visitor sector which is under
represented in the current visitor economy.
